Take Time to Care for Yourself

Caregivers may often put the needs of others before their own, since they are so busy caring for others. However, it is just as important for you as a caregiver to take time to care for yourself. Sacrificing your own health and well-being can put you at risk for developing health problems and won’t help you in your efforts to give your loved one the best care you possibly can.

Here are some things you can do to help care for yourself:

  • Get your yearly physical exam and necessary health screenings
  • Exercise regularly to keep your energy levels up
  • Eat a healthy diet full of lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  • Get enough sleep each night
  • Take time for yourself and the things you enjoy

Taking time to relax can also help relieve stress. Ask other family members or friends for help with caring for your loved one and with daily chores so you can relax. Make sure you also find time to still do the activities and hobbies you enjoy. This will help you have a more positive attitude, and make you feel better about yourself and your responsibilities as a caregiver. You may find it helpful to join a caregiver support group in your community so you can share your experiences with and learn from other caregivers.
